Overusing Jargon

Another way professionals self-sabotage is by overusing jargon. Overusing internal company jargon, industry-specific verbiage, or technical terms can make you sound intimidating, arrogant, and condescending to others. The goal is for you to communicate confidence and instill belief in your competence and ability without making others feel “less-than.”

Charged Words

Our last category of undermining words and phrases is “charged words.” Similar to the other words and phrases in this chapter, charged words, which I also refer to as “finger-pointing” words, have the power to undermine the perception you want others to have of you.

Depending on the environment, the specific situation, the context surrounding the communication, and the person with whom you’re speaking, when spoken alone these words have impact. When paired together, and in conjunction with the vocal delivery surrounding them, they can turn innocent sentiments into aggressive, blaming, intimidating, or condescending messages.

Many of the common phrases that we hear in the workplace include charged words—and are a common reason for miscommunications and misinterpretations. When paired with a certain vocal delivery or body language, these phrases can quickly create communication barriers. If you wound the listener with your words, you may create a wall that is difficult to break down.
